Nicolette Mawas was born in 1933 in Alexandria, Egypt. She went to a French school and describes a happy time in Alexandria, where she joined the Girl Guides. In 1954 she moved to Italy, with a brief period in the USA. In 1977 she and her husband decided to move to the UK and settled in Sussex, where she became a French teacher.
